        Fine Arts

        Fine Arts

The visual and performing arts programs are designed to provide students with classroom instruction in each separate discipline as well as performance and exhibition opportunities.
Lower School students are introduced to basic elements of art design, principles, fundamentals, and history. Projects include drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. Performances include choir and band.

In Middle School, participation and appreciation of the visual and performing arts are an integral component to the curriculum. Courses are designed to encourage student creativity, imagination, individual expression, and skill development. Students explore art, drama, and music within a historical and aesthetic framework.

Upper School visual arts classes give students exposure to more advanced artistic techniques and materials. Emphasis is placed on observational and technical skills, problem solving, personal style, and conceptual thinking. Self-motivated and self-directed projects are encouraged. Students are required to think beyond the first answer, to delve deeper, to see in a new way, and to find their personal voices.

Upper School performing arts classes provide students with a foundation in the principles of theater, dance, choir, and band respectively, as well as the practical application of acquired skills in performance. The history and theories of most famous practitioners in each discipline are also introduced.

        Inkblots Magazine

        Inkblots magazine cover.
Inkblots is the annual Upper School publication of student literature and art. The student editors and staff members decide upon a theme to inspire students to write, and in the fall they introduce the theme and solicit student submissions through a writing contest in the Upper School. The staff selects student literature and art to be published from all of the student submissions, then conceptualize and design the book using professional publishing software. Inkblots has received numerous awards from prestigious scholastic associations. View the 2019 edition of Inkblots titled Altered Landscapes, or read through previous issues in the Inkblots Archive.
